Sainte Devote Corner, Montecarlo,
Monako.
Presentation
about third round of GP2 Series 2015
This
weekend GP2 Series held third round which locate at famous and legendary street
circuit, Montecarlo. After 2nd round in Circuit de Catalunya, Spain
showed us lots of actions and some shuffles in driver’s championship, this time
drivers facing a challenge to beat Montecarlo.
With 3,34
kilometers long, Montecarlo known as slow circuit, no run-off area becuase fence and track
distance are so close, and of course in several spot in this circuit are tight,
so it will give drivers some difficulties to manoeuvre. But there are some
corners which driver can pass by another driver like Sainte Devote, Mirabeau,
Tunnel, Nouvelle Chicane, Tabac, dan Antony Noghes. Drivers should pay
attention twice when make a manoeuvre in Nouvelle Chicane and Antony Noghes. Not
only decide which racing line will be
take, drivers also calculate their timing after passing by to avoid contacs or
crashes. Once they miscalculate, their race are over with “kissing” the barrier.
With slow
character, two main unsure in racing car, like engine and aerodynamic will not
reach maximum point. In Montecarlo, there is no long straights for testing
engine’s performance and not many long corners for testing aerodynamic. High-downforce
set-up are suitable for this circuit although more extreme than Circuit de
Catalunya in order to keep the car still touch the track becuase after Sainte
Devote until exit of Grand Hotel Hairpin, drivers start to go up the hill after
Sainte Devote, then down the hill from Mirabeau until Grand Hotel Hairpin. Compared
with another circuit which have two DRS activation zones, in Montecarlo drivers
only find one DRS activation zone at home straight.
-WARM UP-
Norman Nato (France/Arden International)
“Monaco is a special track for me, because I live in Cannes so it feels like my home circuit. It’s always a pleasure to drive on this track. It’s very tricky. You need to be confident. It will be a difficult weekend for a rookie like me, but I think anything is possible here.
“Qualifying will be even more crucial than usual. It’s very hard to do a perfect lap in Monaco because you are not allowed to make any mistakes otherwise you touch the barrier and it’s over. It’s hard to drive at the limit here. But I think you can make a big difference in Sector 3.
“I don’t think the DRS will be a big gain on this track, because the top speed is quite low. It will be the first time that we will have the super soft Pirelli tyres. This will be tough! But it should make things quite interesting too… I’m really hoping for a good weekend.”
